Community Action, located in Beloit, WI, is a nonprofit organization that strives to prevent and reduce poverty in Rock and Walworth Counties. The organization provides access and opportunity through innovative programs that eliminate barriers and establish clear pathways out of poverty, such as childcare, at-risk programs, emergency food assistance, and affordable housing services. Community Action helps students succeed in the Beloit Fresh Start YouthBuild AmeriCorps program, which co-enrolls students who dropped out of high school with the School District of Beloit. Participants learn how to help themselves and find purpose within the community.
Amir came to Fresh Start after he fell in with the wrong crowd and spent time in jail. He worried Fresh Start wouldn’t admit him because of his background. At Fresh Start, Amir met empathetic staff who inspired and motivated him. With their help, Amir earned his high school diploma and aspires to be an architect.
