Elliptical reinforced concrete pipe manufactured by County Materials is a time-tested solution for storm water management systems. When design constraints call for shallow depths and high flow, engineers turn to elliptical reinforced concrete pipe. Applications include storm drains, culverts, outfalls, pedestrian tunnels, groundwater recharge systems, and more.
Efficiency
Washington County officials decided to update Stillwater Road according to community input. While the road was under construction, project leaders opted to upsize the underground utilities and make drainage improvements. County Materials' Elliptical Reinforced Concrete Pipe was specified for significant time savings with durability and performance.
Hydraulic Capacity
After several years of planning, a stretch of U.S. Highway 10 in Manitowoc, WI, known as Waldo Boulevard, underwent extensive reconstruction that prompted storm water infrastructure updates. The existing reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) system, installed nearly 100 years prior, remained in serviceable condition but proved undersized and unable to accommodate excess runoff. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation enhanced the system’s flow capacity by upgrading to larger round and elliptical RCP manufactured by County Materials.
Extended Service Life
In early October 2019, Mike Draxler, a trustee with the Village of Hewitt in Central Wisconsin, contacted County Materials seeking storm water management solutions because the small village was struggling with regular flooding in residential areas and roadways.
The existing culverts were not only undersized, but many were corroded to the point that they were no longer performing. County Materials replaced the metal culverts with larger concrete culverts. Reinforced concrete pipe inherently has a longer service life than all other culvert materials and the selection of concrete pipe is an unmatched long-term solution.
