Reconnecting Students with Learning Through Root 2 Rise

Written by Admin | May 20, 2025

Root 2 Rise is a nonprofit organization that began in 2017 as a peer mentoring and tutoring program at Madison's West High School. Founder Denise Hanson, a lifelong educator and Positive Behavior Coach, saw that leadership opportunities and responsibility were powerful tools for re-engaging students in their education. Root 2 Rise matches high school students with younger students for one-on-one tutoring, creating meaningful mentoring relationships. The impact has been overwhelmingly positive—according to a recent survey, participating high school tutors report feeling proud and empowered as leaders.

Joanna, a Tutor-Mentor in the program, describes her experience with Root 2 Rise as incredibly positive. “I enjoy being able to help my students in any way that I can, whether it’s academically or simply having a buddy they can talk to. Root 2 Rise has taught me to be the kind of leader I never knew I could be. I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned and pass that knowledge on to younger students, hopefully helping to shape their futures for the better.”

County Materials supports Root 2 Rise's programming in Madison and the surrounding area. This summer, County Materials' support will help Root 2 Rise offer its fourth season of summer mentoring for Madison West High School students. Additionally, Root 2 Rise will offer summer programs at DeForest High School and Lighthouse Christian School. These experiences empower students to become confident leaders, reconnect with their education, and discover skills they never knew they had.

Through the Sonnentag American Foundation, County Materials supports dozens of worthy organizations. We provide support in four key service areas: Hunger & Homelessness Support, Service Member & Veteran Support, Sexual Abuse & Domestic Assault Services, and Mentoring & Skills Building.
