A History of Mentoring; County Materials Provides Support for Youth in Crisis

Jan 6, 2023

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nonprofit organization that is a leader in helping children and youth reach their potential and build their futures because of mentorships between a Big and a Little. A mentor is instrumental in developing the Little’s confidence to overcome challenges they face in life and achieve their full potential. As part of our commitment to strengthening the communities where we do business, County Materials supports organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters through its annual charity golf outing.

It was in 1904 that this organization, then named Big Brothers, began a movement to recruit caring volunteers to work with the young men who were moving at an expedited rate through the court system and mentor them to reconsider their life choices. The group eventually became Big Brothers Big Sisters in 1977. What began as an idea from a court clerk has become one of the largest and most successful mentoring programs in the world.

County Materials, through the Sonnentag American Foundation, supports dozens of worthy organizations and causes in four service areas, including Hunger and Homelessness Support, Service Member and Veteran Support, Sexual Abuse and Domestic Assault Services, and Mentoring and Skills Building.
