Celebrating Skilled Masonry: 2024 Bricklayer 500 Competition

Apr 30, 2024

County Materials is proud to recognize a local mason for becoming the first back-to-back winner of the Bricklayer 500, a national competition that celebrates excellence in masonry. Michael Schlund, a mason from Wausau, won this year’s competition after he and his mason tender laid 752 bricks in one hour.

Spec Mix is a leader in the construction industry and delivers high quality performance products and project solutions for construction professionals. Each year, the company hosts the Bricklayer 500 competition to test the speed, skill, and stamina of the competing bricklayers.

County Materials is a proud sponsor of the Jr. Bricklayer 500. We appreciate the opportunity to empower the next generation of skilled trades professionals and to highlight the importance and the rewarding nature of careers in the construction and manufacturing industries.

Participants in the Bricklayer 500 have one hour to build a 26-foot-long brick wall, and the masons with the tallest, highest-quality walls win. One mason per regional competition advances to Las Vegas at the World of Concrete trade show to compete for the title of “World’s Best Bricklayer.” Michael Schlund’s performance in this year’s competition highlights the exceptional craftsmanship demonstrated by skilled masons across the country.

Michael Schlund’s mason tender, Aaron Kowalski, is the owner of his family business, Kowalski Masonry. County Materials is proud to partner with the company and to supply quality concrete masonry products for their residential and commercial projects. We celebrate Aaron’s contributions to winning the Bricklayer 500 and congratulate him on his achievement.

Each year, in addition to the Bricklayer 500, Spec Mix hosts the Jr. Bricklayer 500 to offer high school and apprentice students the opportunity to compete against their peers on the biggest stage in masonry. Participants are challenged by a 20-minute clock and a starter wall measuring nine feet and four inches.

Together, we’re building a company that hardworking individuals are proud to work for, live near, and do business with since 1946.
