County Materials Partners with Can Play to Make Sports Accessible for Underserved Youth

Apr 15, 2025

Since 2012, Can Play has made sports accessible to young people in Central Iowa facing financial, physical, cognitive, emotional, or chronic health barriers. The organization’s mission is to eliminate the participation gap in sports and recreation, ensuring that underprivileged youth have the opportunity to engage in activities that positively impact them on physical, social, mental, and developmental levels.

County Materials supports Can Play by helping fund new equipment and train new locations. Their adapted sports programs provide children with the opportunity to build confidence, develop social skills, and explore their abilities and interests. Participants are grouped into two categories: LIKEability™ and PLAYability™. LIKEability focuses on participants with similar abilities, allowing them to progress through specially adapted stations at their own pace. PLAYability divides participants into balanced teams with varying abilities, fostering inclusive and competitive team play or group games.

Through the Sonnentag American Foundation, County Materials supports dozens of charitable organizations like Can Play. We provide support in four key service areas: Hunger & Homelessness Support, Service Member & Veteran Support, Sexual Abuse & Domestic Assault Services, and Mentoring & Skills Building.
