Driveway Pavers: A Versatile Paving Solution for Long-Lasting Curb Appeal

Aug 6, 2025

Few upgrades transform a home’s exterior like a paver driveway. Concrete driveway pavers combine high-end style with long-lasting performance, offering design flexibility, easy maintenance, and superior durability compared to alternative materials like asphalt.

County Materials Driveway Pavers

County Materials’ pavers are manufactured with high-quality concrete that can handle the weight of vehicles. We manufacture five collections of pavers recommended for driveway applications. Each collection offers select sizes that meet aspect ratio guidelines provided by Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association.

Consult your contractor for larger paver sizes and slabs that may be suitable for your driveway based on grade and installation methods.

Each of our premium driveway pavers are available in a wide range of colors, sizes, and textures. Our reliable sales team can help you make the best selection for your project.

Best Types of Pavers for Driveways

There are three primary types of driveway pavers: concrete pavers, natural stone pavers, and clay brick pavers. Each paving material provides unique advantages.

Concrete pavers are a durable, cost-effective, and versatile paving solution. Manufactured to precise dimensions, they offer the simplest installation and can provide either a perfectly smooth surface or a textured surface that mimics natural stone, textiles, or other elements. Concrete pavers offer the most design flexibility because they are manufactured in a variety of colors, sizes, and textures, allowing you to create a custom look for your driveway that complements your home’s design.

Natural stone pavers are another durable paving solution offering timeless aesthetics, but both the material cost and installation labor are significantly more expensive than concrete pavers, and the variations in size and texture tend to create an uneven surface.

Finally, clay brick pavers offer a traditional aesthetic and long service life. However, the natural variations in paver sizes can lead to higher installation costs. Designers have fewer options when working with clay brick because colors are limited to shades of pink, red, and brown, and the bricks are typically only available in standard brick sizes.

Concrete Pavers Boost Curb Appeal and Complement Any Architectural Style

Your driveway has a huge impact on a visitor’s first impression of your home. A stunning paver driveway can create a wow factor that wins over a prospective buyer from the start. Investing in a paver driveway can lead to a higher selling price, as well. A survey done by Thumbtack, a home improvement app, found that the average homeowner perceives a house with high curb appeal to be 34% more valuable than the same house with poor curb appeal.

Mix and Match Colors, Shapes, and Textures with Dimensionally Compatible Pavers

County Materials’ dimensionally compatible pavers are manufactured in four-inch increments with uniform heights (2 ¾ inches/70mm), allowing them to integrate effortlessly. Our leading driveway paver lines are designed for form, function, and design versatility: DISCOVER PAVERS, ELEMENTS Paving Stones, and VANTAGE PAVERS. See more examples of ways to mix and match our products to match any aesthetic on our Landscape Inspiration page.

Create Custom Paver Designs and Intricate Patterns

Concrete pavers can be cut to any size or shape desired, from sweeping curves to delicate angles. The creative possibilities are endless. A striking example of the design potential of concrete pavers is the compass feature from the Winding Grove Entrance project, which visually anchors the entire driveway.

A decorative border made with pavers in contrasting colors or varied textures makes a striking accent that can boost visibility along the edges of your driveway. Framed with a triple border in complementary shades, the Peaceable Hill Residential Landscape project driveway achieves a refined, multi-dimensional look.

Match Any Architectural Style

Concrete pavers come in a wide variety of colors, textures, shapes, and sizes, making it a breeze to match your home’s architecture and blend with your outdoor spaces, whether it’s traditional, contemporary, modern, rustic, monochromatic, or any other style. For example, the owners of this contemporary home in Minnesota used County Materials’ plank-style Influence Pavers to create an eye-catching driveway.

Paver Driveways Provide Performance Advantages

Properly installed concrete paver driveways outperform asphalt driveways, resisting cracks, rippling, and damage from extreme temperatures. According to ASTM guidelines, concrete pavers must meet a minimum compressive strength of 8,000 psi. County Materials’ pavers exceed these standards. This higher strength makes our pavers less prone to cracking during freeze-thaw cycles than other paving materials. When installed to industry specifications, paver driveways typically last 20 to 30 years with minimal maintenance—and with proper care, often 50 years or more.

Long-lasting, Vibrant Color

County Materials’ pavers are manufactured with Genesis Face-Mix Technology™ for long-lasting color performance. We bond high-strength face-mix to the base of each concrete paver. This increases durability, enhances color pigments, and meets industry standards for strength and absorption.

Segmented Design Enables Easy Repair

Driveways take a beating, but unlike asphalt, paver driveways are easy to repair. If a paver is damaged—say, by a falling heavy object—it can be lifted and replaced individually. The polymeric sand that holds pavers in place can be removed as needed, making repairs quick and seamless. In contrast, patching asphalt is a temporary solution that leaves visible signs of repair.

Minimal Maintenance Requirements

Pavers perform well in wintry climates and require minimal ongoing maintenance. Their high compressive strength helps them withstand freeze/thaw cycles. The uniformly flat surface of a paver driveway makes manual snow removal simple. De-icers should be avoided because they can damage pavers and shorten their service life. Refer to our Care and Maintenance guidelines for more information.

Solutions for Impervious Surface Limitations

Many communities have limitations on the amount of surface area that can be covered with an impervious pavement type like asphalt. Permeable pavers, which are concrete pavers designed to be installed with wider gaps between each paver to allow rainwater to drain between the pavers, can help overcome these limitations, allowing for a wider driveway than would be otherwise possible. Permeable pavers are also suitable for commercial driveways and parking lots and can help projects achieve LEED certification.

Compatible with Underground Heating Elements

Concrete pavers are compatible with heated driveway systems, like this Minnesota home featuring ELEMENTS Paving Stones.

Concrete Pavers Streamline Hardscape Projects

Concrete pavers offer key installation advantages that save landscape contractors time, hassle, and cost. When tight access makes pouring a slab impractical or expensive—such as between houses or in backyards—pavers can be installed using compact equipment. Installation is less disruptive to surrounding landscaping than other paving methods, and pavers can be enjoyed immediately following installation. Pavers can be cut to fit seamlessly around existing features like sidewalks, aprons, or natural stone steps—allowing contractors to adapt to existing site conditions.

Paver Driveway FAQs

Do paver driveways need to be sealed?

Sealing pavers is recommended, though not required, to protect them from oil stains and extend their service life. Concrete sealers may minimize damage from deicing chemicals, prevent staining, and enhance color. If you choose to use a sealer, it is recommended to use a penetrating sealer which is breathable. Be sure to comply with all instructions provided by the sealing agent manufacturer and test a small area first.

What’s the maximum slope for a paver driveway?

Paver driveways can be constructed on steep slopes. For example, a paver street in Colma, California, has an 18% grade. Building codes vary by location, and many cities require slopes of less than 15% for driveways. For example, the town of New Glarus, WI, requires driveways to have a slope of 13% or less. As a general guideline, if your driveway’s grade meets local building code requirements, you can likely build it with pavers. Consult with your contractor to ensure you’re choosing the best paving option for your project.

Are County Materials pavers interlocking?

Interlocking pavers are pavers that gain strength from the combined effect of the paver shape, tight joint spacing, base preparation, and laying pattern. All County Materials pavers are considered interlocking pavers. Patterns like herringbone or multi-piece layouts help distribute loads and prevent movement, making the surface more durable under traffic.

What is the recommended aspect ratio of a driveway paver?

The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA)’s guidelines recommend that pavers used for driveways should not have an aspect ratio (paver length divided by paver thickness) greater than 4:1.

*Aspect Ratio Disclaimer: County Materials unit “slab(s)” as pictured above do not meet aspect ratio for vehicular application, as defined by CMHA standards. It is the responsibility and discretion of Buyer, Owner, Contractor, Architect, or Engineer to determine whether these unit “slab(s)” are suitable for the specific project. County Materials recommends consulting with a qualified professional to assess the suitability for the project. County Materials Corporation accepts no responsibility or liability for the use of unit “slab(s)” in a vehicular application.
