Park Shelter Showcases Beauty and Functionality of County Materials’ Concrete Masonry Products

Apr 11, 2023

The Village of College Grove, along with many volunteers, has been working for many years to make Phoebe Bakken Memorial Park into a destination park. The park is named after long-time local elementary school teacher Phoebe Bakken, who donated a large portion of her estate upon her death to the Village of Cottage Grove’s parks and recreation department.

In 2020, the village took a major step toward enhancing the park by constructing a new shelter and bathroom facility. Project leaders sought aesthetically pleasing and durable materials that would require minimal maintenance over a long service life.

Concrete masonry products manufactured by County Materials proved ideal for this project. MSA Professionals designed the building using Heritage Collection™ Designer Concrete Brick in Autumn Blend and Splitface Block in Cream. Combining the smooth texture of the Heritage Collection units with the roughened surface of the rusticated Splitface units created a dramatic visual impact for the centerpiece of the multi-use park.

The completion of the shelter paved the way for the construction of the community’s first splash pad on the park grounds. The park’s other amenities include an imaginative playground and an ADA-friendly baseball field.

Heritage Collection units are a cost-effective solution for a wide variety of municipal projects. Available in structural concrete load-bearing or full and thin veneer units, concrete brick provides limitless design flexibility. Concrete is a low-maintenance building material that naturally resists fire, rot and severe weather. The consistent sizes of concrete masonry units manufactured by County Materials can speed up installation time by minimizing the amount of cutting required.

Project leaders were proud to offer park users a beautiful and functional shelter that will last for decades.
