Chemical Admixtures Enhance Versatility of Ready-Mix Concrete

Jun 7, 2024

Ready-mix concrete is a highly versatile building material that can be customized to meet the requirements of a wide variety of applications.

Admixtures are natural or manufactured chemicals added to the concrete before or during mixing in order to give special properties to fresh or hardened concrete.

The most often used admixtures are air-entraining agents, water reducers, water-reducing retarders, and accelerators. Admixtures can be used to overcome difficult construction situations, such as hot or cold weather placements, pumping requirements, early-age strength requirements, or specifications that require low water-cementitious materials ratio.

For industrial applications, concrete mixes often utilize admixtures to inhibit corrosion, withstand heavy loads, repel water, or decrease permeability. In structural concrete applications, innovative admixtures can be used to accelerate construction. Superplasticizing admixture helps concrete reach high strengths rapidly, allowing plumbing and electric trades to work upward as new floors are poured above.

Admixtures can also be used in decorative concrete applications to change the color of ready-mix to intentionally compliment features in nearby structures or within the natural landscape.
