Concrete Masonry Units Provide Sustainable, Elegant, and Durable Solution for Manufacturing Center

Feb 22, 2023

County Materials’ Premier Ultra® Burnished Masonry Units were used to create a stunning and practical façade for the Promega Component Manufacturing Center in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

Project leaders specified Premier Ultra Burnished Masonry Units for their exceptional durability, design flexibility, and sustainability. Premier Ultra units are integrally colored, and their surface is ground smooth to reveal a mix of beautiful natural aggregates. Providing the timeless look of hand-cut stone or granite for a fraction of the cost, burnished masonry units are an elegant alternative in concrete masonry construction.

Energy efficiency and sustainability were high priorities for this state-of-the-art facility, which houses product manufacturing lines and office space. Manufactured with abundant natural resources and up to 30 percent pre-consumer recycled materials, burnished masonry units can help buildings achieve LEED® certification.

Flad Architects used four colors and multiple sizes of masonry units to create an eye-catching modern design. From a distance, the horizontal lines of each color emulate slender planks of siding. The variegated four-color pattern complements natural stone and metal architectural details in the façade, while lending an air of sophistication and permanence to the facility.

The creative use of concrete masonry units earned this project the Best in Show award in the Wisconsin Masonry Alliance’s 2022 Excellence in Masonry Awards.

With high fire resistance ratings and low maintenance requirements, Premier Ultra Burnished Masonry Units are a preferred building material of architects and designers across the country.
