As the aftermath of Tropical Storm Cristobal passed through the Chippewa Valley, persistent rainfall caused flash-flooding and washouts throughout the area. Around 1:30am, aging twin metal culverts gave way, causing a massive washout. From a driver’s perspective, the road appeared safe; however, beneath the asphalt, the hollow area posed a potentially fatal hazard. WisDOT crews rushed to the site and called County Materials to expedite delivery of two 84-inch reinforced concrete pipes for an emergency culvert replacement.
