County Materials Partners with Market & Johnson to Repair Sparta Dugout

Jun 27, 2023

County Materials recently partnered with Market and Johnson, Inc. to repair an aging baseball dugout in the Sparta School District. The project aimed to help the community and its non-profit sports programs as well as to offer students the opportunity to learn about construction. County Materials donated concrete masonry units (CMUs) to the cause, and Market and Johnson donated labor. Market and Johnson also included students in the repair process to give them exposure to working with block and to educate them on manufacturing and construction careers. They stated "We plan to utilize the material to have Sparta students help, alongside with experienced Market employees, [and] experience what it is like on a construction jobsite to promote masonry and other trades.”

Three baseball players in the school district participated in the repair. They were able to observe the construction of a new dugout and even lay several CMUs themselves. After the project was completed, each student signed a block they had installed, and a Market and Johnson employee signed their name into the mortar joints so it was visible after paint was applied.

County Materials values opportunities to provide interactive technical education experiences. In addition to product donations, we also host plant tours and participate in career panels to promote hands-on learning and inspire students to get involved in concrete manufacturing and the skilled trades.

Together, we're building a company that hardworking people are proud to work for, live near, and do business with since 1946.
