D.C. Everest Senior High School offers a variety of technical education electives for students to gain hands-on experience and learn more about pursing careers as skilled laborers. For the past 20 years, the school’s introductory construction class has provided students with a semester-long overview of the many facets of the broad construction field.
Each semester, a week-long masonry unit educates students on the industry and allows them first-hand experience laying brick in small groups. County Materials proudly supported the masonry unit this past academic year through the donation of mason sand. As the need for skilled laborers continues to grow, County Materials believes the gap can be filled through education and access to hands-on opportunities for students to discover their interests.
Students who took special interest in the construction class can advance their skills in Constructions Trades, a course where they can build a home in partnership with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. County Materials also supports this effort through the donation of ready-mix for the two homes’ foundations.
As for the students who took particular interest in the masonry unit, they went on to compete in the Junior Spec Mix Bricklayer 500, a regional bricklaying competition amongst high school students and mason apprentices. D.C. Everest was thrilled to announce one of its students took 2nd place overall in the competition.
County Materials is an industry leader that supports the education and development of the skilled labor workforce and the individuals who are interested in pursuing related careers. The company recognizes the majority of students are initially exposed to the industry through technical education courses, thus County Materials continues to support these programs to keep the future of the industry looking strong.
