Structural Concrete Framing Offers Benefits During and After Construction

Dec 19, 2024

Structural concrete framing is a cast-in-place concrete construction method that offers an alternative to steel framing for mid-and high-rise structures. This technique offers several benefits during and after construction.

Construction

The use of readily available and locally sourced materials in structural concrete framing provides a time advantage over steel framing. With structural concrete framing, the general contractor can maintain strict control of the schedule and utilize just-in-time delivery to reduce the need for onsite storage of building materials.

Admixtures can also be used to overcome construction challenges. Superplasticizing admixtures help concrete structures reach high strengths rapidly, allowing plumbing and electric trades to quickly begin work on lower floors while higher floors are being poured.

Occupant Safety & Comfort

Buildings with structural concrete frames offer many benefits for occupants. Because of concrete’s high mass, structural concrete contributes to improved sound absorption, resulting in quieter indoor spaces.

As a noncombustible material, concrete also offers high fire resistance. Should a fire occur, concrete walls and floor systems act as fire-resistant partitions that slow the spread of flames from room to room. This contributes to high fire ratings, which improves occupant safety and can reduce insurance costs.

Reduced Operating Expenses

During periods of extreme heat and extreme cold, the high thermal mass of concrete helps regulate indoor temperatures. Because heat flows slowly through concrete, warm indoor air escapes slowly in the winter and hot summer air enters the building slowly. This can reduce the load on HVAC systems and provide significant energy savings for building owners.

Concrete is also highly durable. Buildings made with structural concrete are less expensive to maintain than buildings constructed with steel.
