Structural Concrete Framing Proves Advantages Over Steel

Aug 29, 2022

Cast-in-place, structural concrete framing offers mid-and high-rise structures unmatched benefits from preconstruction to completion.

Buildings with structural concrete frames are inherently quieter, stronger, safer, more energy-efficient, and less expensive to maintain than buildings constructed with steel. Additionally, concrete is one of the most fire-resistant materials available, which reduces the cost of insurance.

Readily available and locally sourced materials give structural concrete framing a time advantage over steel. The project construction team has direct control of scheduling, allowing just-in-time delivery and reducing onsite storage.

Admixtures can be used to overcome construction challenges. Superplasticizing admixture helps concrete reach high strengths rapidly, allowing plumbing and electric trades to work upward as new floors are poured above.

Beyond time and cost savings, admixture innovation permits the use of longer spans and smaller columns to maximize usable space. In commercial applications, this increases marketable space, tenant options, and return on investment.

The Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association offers valuable technical resources for designers and contractors that provide ready-mix solutions. For more information, refer to the publication “Mid- and High-Rise Structural Concrete Framing” on WRMCA’s website.
